Lomong's journey began as one of the victims of Sudan's brutal civil war of the 1990s, where he was one of hundreds of thousands of the country's Lost Boys of Sudan. At age six he escaped from a prison camp, running for his life, until he crossed the Kenyan border.
After years in a refugee camp, he was adopted by an American family that encouraged him to pursue his interest in track and field, then went on to become a world-class collegiate then professional runner, and in 2008 he was the flag bearer for the United States at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
